Under 8 (2004)

Saturday 25th Feb (Voicemessage @ 086 723 2533 )

All MINIs playing games vs Cobh at Highfield this Saturday
Highfield Under 8s had two very exciting matches against Cork Constitution last Saturday. There was large attendance from Cork Con with 19 players turning up facilitating two matches in parallel with subs introduced regularly ensuring everyone got to see plenty of action. Both teams played a very open game of rugby with the "3 pass rule" dictating that the ball went through many hands. Some very impressive team tries as a result. Both teams were very sporting and we look forward to playing Cork again in the not to distant future.

We host Cobh on Saturday next - please check the website for details. A reminder to players and parents that a correctly fitting gum shield is essential, otherwise we cannot permit them to play unfortunately. It is very important also that the players keep their gum shields firmly around their teeth - any help in reinforcing that particular message by parents would be very much appreciated

We had a good turnout for the U8s against Muskerry last Saturday where we had enough players to play accommodate two matches while facilitate some training at the side as well. Through rotation everyone had an opportunity to play against two sporting Muskerry sides. Having played Muskerry earlier in the season it was great to see how both club's teams have improved and delivered a great game of rugby despite the somewhat tricky underfoot conditions. There were some great individual displays on both sides with an improvement in passing observable every week.

We also are delighted to welcome a number of newcomers in Nathan, Jonathan and just this week Bobby.

A reminder that there is no match or training on Feb 11th due to a coaches training event, but we are back in Highfield to play Cork Con on the 18th of February. We are looking forward to seeing a full squad of players there.

Highfield Squad against Muskerry
Brian Donnelly, Luke O'Sullivan, Mark O'Connell, David Tobin, Conor Ryan, Cuan Deasy, Jack Kelleher, Joe McNamara, Karl Crowley, Kevin Whelan Rock, Cillian Twomey, Cormac D'Aughton, Jack Twomey, William Hetherington, Oscar Nangle, Nathan, Brian Sweeney, Eolan Lynch, Adam, Chris Sweeney, Ben Kiely, Michael Dineen, Myles Fitzgerald, Cormac Hegarty, Emmet Fitzgerald, Fintan O'Flynn, Jonathan Connolly.

We had Ray Gant from Munster Rugby take a good portion of our training session last Saturday - it was greatly appreciated by the coaches and young players alike and all were disappointed when he had to depart. He gave us all plenty of new training routines to help improve the key skills for U8s. The U8s will miss him at this week's training as it is back to the usual suspects, but we will have future visits from both Ray and Finney in the coming week, which will be very welcome

Yet another new recruit to our U8 ranks last Saturday - Adam you are very welcome. Adam made a very positive impression in only his first run out with some very good running lines as it was with a large number of the team with more and more players really demonstrating a very significant step in the right direction and we look forward to seeing Adam play again with us.

We will be training on Saturday at 10:30 at Highfield - it will be a home match against Old Christians the following week Again a note to parents to ensure that the U8s are wearing the right clothing for the conditions, in particular in the very cold weather. A correctly fitting gum shield is also essential, otherwise we cannot permit them to play unfortunately. It is very important also that the players keep their gumshields firmly around their teeth - any help in reinforcing that particular message would be very much appreciated. If you are not in a position to remain at the training please arrive at ca 11:45, as training finishes between then and 12:00, to collect your son
